This journey is designed for guests who want to experience Sri Lanka through one of South Asia's most powerful epic narratives, following the island sites connected to Lord Rama, Sita, Hanuman, Ravana, and Vibhishana.
The route moves across the island from Chilaw and Anuradhapura to Jaffna, Trincomalee, Nuwara Eliya, Kataragama, Galle, and Colombo. It combines temples, springs, shrines, and landscapes tied to the story, while still feeling smooth and privately paced from one region to the next.
It works best as a spiritual and cultural route rather than a rushed checklist. We shape the timing on the ground so each sacred stop has enough space, while the long crossings remain comfortable and well-managed.
Temples, shrines, springs, hill-country sites, and legendary landscapes that bring the Ramayana story into the journey.
A Chamo-style version of the 7-night, 8-day Ramayana route, paced for private travel across the island.
Begin with Manavari Temple in Chilaw, where Lord Rama is believed to have installed the Shiva Lingam known as Ramalingam after defeating Ravana. Continue north to Anuradhapura for the first overnight of the trail.
Travel to Jaffna and visit the revered Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, one of the north's most important Hindu shrines and a major centre of devotion and cultural heritage in Sri Lanka.
Head east to Trincomalee for two key Ramayana-linked sites: Thirukoneswaram Kovil, tied to Ravana's devotion and Lord Rama's atonement, and the Kanniya Hot Springs, believed in legend to have been created by Ravana.
Climb into the highlands and stop at the Shri Bhakta Hanuman Temple in Ramboda, the place where Hanuman is believed to have searched for Sita. Continue onward into the cool hill country around Nuwara Eliya.
This is one of the most spiritually significant days of the route. Visit Sita Amman Kovil, believed to mark the place where Sita was held captive, then continue to Divurumpola Temple, linked to Sita's Agni Pariksha, before reaching Kataragama and the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Dewalaya.
Travel south and west, stopping at Ussangoda, believed in legend to have been one of Ravana's landing strips for the Pushpaka Vimana, then continue to Rumassala near Galle, the hill associated with Hanuman's journey carrying the mountain of lifesaving herbs.
Reach Colombo and visit Kelaniya Temple, where Prince Vibhishana is venerated after being crowned ruler of Lanka. The temple also carries wider Buddhist significance, making it one of the richest spiritual stops on the trail.
Use the final stretch in Colombo for rest, shopping, or a lighter city moment before your departure transfer. The route closes with the capital as a calm last stop after the sacred circuit across the island.
"This is one of Sri Lanka's most meaningful cultural journeys, where mythology, devotion, and the island's geography meet on one route."Chamo Tours Ramayana Route Note
This is a longer overland cultural route, so the best version depends on balancing sacred stops with comfortable driving days and well-chosen overnight breaks.
Temple customs, dress guidance, and pacing can all be tailored to the expectations of the guests traveling the route.
The Ramayana Trail can be done year-round, with exact timing, overnight placement, and the order of certain stops adjusted around weather and road flow.
